Two representatives from Saffron Strathcona Sexual Assault Centre spoke on the modern age of bullying. Katie Kitschke, a public educator with Saffron, spoke about cyber bullying to youth at The Vault on Nov. 20. Cyber bullying is defined as the use of technology to support deliberate, hostile and hurtful behaviour towards an individual or group of individuals. Just like other forms of bullying, cyber bullying is all about power and control. |

"Sexual Violence!" Two words many are uncomfortable speaking about or let alone feel is an issue in our county and surrounding area. Well it is an issue and many of us need to take note! It is disturbing to know that more than half of sexual assaults in Alberta occur outside Calgary and Edmonton. Stats Canada Criminal Victimization Survey states "one in three girls and one in five boys will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18. |

January 2009 release scheduled for DVD that’s receiving widespread attention Saffron, the Strathcona Sexual Assault Centre, released a preview for its DVD on cyberbullying on Friday. Dorthe Flauer, executive director of Saffron, said the full hour-long DVD will be released in January 2009 and will include an optional supplementary package to enhance learning. The release will include a panel discussion. |

A 13-year-old student is being charged after creating a fake online profile to bully another student. Const. Wally Henry, media liaison with the Strathcona RCMP, said police did a one-month investigation into the illegal use of Nexopia. The name of the accused cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth invited other users to make hateful comments about the fellow student. The profile was online for about four days in the first week of October before it was removed. The 13-year-old was released on a promise to appear in court. Potential charges could include mischief, uttering threats and publishing defamatory libel known to be false – an indictable offence. |

Ctrl, Alt, Delete , a locally produced anti-cyber bullying DVD, debuted at Sherwood Park Alliance Church Sunday evening. Audience members were handed packages of facial tissue that read, “Cyber-bullying – it’s a crying shame” as they entered the theater. Executive director of Saffron, the Strathcona sexual assault centre, Dorthe Flauer, told audience remembers, “I hope everyone has a Kleenex packet, you’re going to need it.” |

Although the Wild Rose Foundation has been cut, due to this year’s Alberta budget issues, the province is still following through on some promised funding for provincial charities. Seventeen organizations in Sherwood Park will receive funds from the province over the next two weeks through the Community Spirit Program. The announcement was made last week by the Ministry of Culture and Community Spirit. Combined, those 17 Sherwood Park charities will receive a little more than $243,900. Some area charities will receive as much as $25,000. |
